HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF TOORO BABIES HOME The idea was then shared with the Bishop of the Greater Rwenzori Late Bishop Yonasani Rwakaikara. Then Rwenzori Diocese offered land where the Home is currently situated. With the spirit of ecumenism i.e. (relationship with other Christian denominations). In 1970 it was inaugurated as a charitable orphanage on 19th September 1970. Tooro Babies’ Home was originally established as a branch home of ‘Sanyu Babies Home’ and consequently adopted the constitution of the same; But from 1980 to date the home became independent. The establishment of Tooro Babies’ Home would have been impossible had it not been substantial financial support from a group of Girl Guides and boy scouts from Norway who were approached by the first matron of Norwegian origin Ms. Ell Rodd; Later the concept was also adopted by Bishop Festo Kivengere who became a strong fund raiser through his organization African Evangelical Enterprise (AEE) in mid 80’s. Since then the concept has been fully appreciated by the local community, International Charitable Organizations, churches and Local Organizations. What surprises me today after 40 years is that the home which was originally constructed and managed by a Norwegian friend is currently enjoying a stable support from yet a young and new set of Norwegian friends and Christians led by Ms. Gerda under an organization known as TORO CHILD CARE CENTER (TCCC). The church had a vision and a commitment of creating a conducive environment where orphans and vulnerable children would find a positive upbringing. Toro Babies home is governed by a board of trustees (Two Bishops of Rwenzori and Fort portal Diocese’s), 9 board members, 1 matron and 14 support staff taking care of 43 children being housed in 6 homes. I personally on behalf of the trustees, members of Board of Governors, the staff members and then entire Tooro Babies Home Community would like to express my sincere gratitude and heart felt appreciation to all friends past and current of Tooro Babies Home.
